Hong Kong International at Chek Lap Kok is one of the world’s major hubs, home to Cathay Pacific and HK Express, with a very dense network across Asia and long-haul routes everywhere.
Before you book
Getting in is easy. The Airport Express reaches Central in 24 minutes, with free shuttle buses to major hotels and in-town check-in the day before departure. The A-series buses cost about a fifth. See airport to the city.
Visa-free entry applies to citizens of around 170 countries for periods from 7 to 180 days — British nationals get 180, most EU and North American passports 90. Check your own; the arrangements are generous but not universal.
Hong Kong is a separate immigration territory from mainland China. A Chinese visa does not admit you here, and entering Hong Kong does not admit you to the mainland.
Stopovers are common and easy. Hong Kong sits on the routes between Europe, Australia and much of Asia, and a two- or three-day stop costs little on a long itinerary.
When fares are lowest
Summer — June to September — is cheapest, and is also hot, humid and typhoon season.
October to December is the best weather and the most expensive.
Chinese New Year in late January or February sees fares and hotels spike, and a great many small businesses close for several days. Check the dates.
The Rugby Sevens in spring fills the city.
Onward
Macau by ferry from the airport’s SkyPier without clearing Hong Kong immigration, or by bus over the bridge.
Mainland China — high-speed rail from West Kowloon to Shenzhen in 14 minutes and Guangzhou in about 50, with immigration in the station. A Chinese visa is required for most nationalities and must be arranged in advance.
The rest of Asia — Taipei, Manila, Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo and Seoul are all short flights, and Hong Kong is a sensible base for a wider trip.
On arrival
Buy an Octopus card in the arrivals hall. It is the single most useful ten minutes you will spend.
Free wifi throughout; local SIMs and eSIMs are cheap and widely sold.
