Hong Kong rooms are small and expensive. A mid-range room of 18 to 22 square metres is normal. That is the fact to plan around.
The decision that matters
Tsim Sha Tsui — the tip of Kowloon, facing the skyline across the water. The harbour view is here because you are looking at the island rather than standing on it. Well connected and crowded.
Central and Admiralty — the business district, most expensive, and quiet at weekends.
Sheung Wan and Kennedy Town — better value, genuinely a neighbourhood, the best small restaurants, on the tram and the MTR.
Wan Chai and Causeway Bay — value on the island with good transport.
Jordan, Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok — cheapest, closest to the markets and the best cheap food, and noisy.
The full comparison is in where to stay in Hong Kong.
Before booking
Room size in square metres, which reputable listings state. Photographs use wide lenses.
Whether there is a window. Some cheaper rooms genuinely have none.
How far to an MTR station, uphill or level. Hong Kong is steep and humid.
Whether “harbour view” means a view. The premium is large and the promenade, the Star Ferry and the Peak all give you the same thing for nothing.
Noise — ask for a high floor away from the main road, particularly on Nathan Road and in Wan Chai.
Serviced apartments often give more floor area than a hotel at a similar rate and are worth considering over three nights.
When it costs most
October to December for the weather. Chinese New Year and the Rugby Sevens both fill the city.
Summer is cheapest, hottest and typhoon season.
